Outtakes From Outer Space
(1965-70)

This RoIO is similar to "A Saucerful Of Outtakes". There are 3 more
tracks, but I'm pretty sure the first 14 tracks were dubbed from "A Saucerful Of
Outtakes". Even the cover is the same (they only changed the title).

Lyrics

04. Astronomy Domine (Barrett) tracks

Lime and limpid green, a second scene,
A fight between the blue you once knew.
Floating down, the sound resounds
Around the icy waters underground
Jupiter and Saturn Oberon Miranda
And Titania Neptune Titan
Stars can frighten...

Blinding signs flap,
Flicker, flicker, flicker
Blam pow pow
Stairway scare Dan dare who's there...
Lime and limpid green
The sounds around the icy waters under
Lime and limpid green
The sounds around the icy waters
Underground.

08. Matilda Mother (Barrett) tracks

There was a king who ruled the land.
His majesty was in command.
With silver eyes the scarlet eagle
Showers silver on the people.
Oh Mother, tell me more.

Why'd'ya have to leave me there
Hanging in my infant air
Waiting?
You only have to read the lines
They're scribbly black and everything shines.

Across the stream with wooden shoes
With bells to tell the king the news
A thousand misty riders climb up
Higher once upon a time.

Wandering and dreaming
The words have different meaning.
Yes they did.

For all the time spent in that room
The doll's house, darkness, old perfume
And fairy sories held me high on
Clouds of sunlight floating by.
Oh Mother, tell me more
Tell me more.
Aaaaaaaah
Aaaaaaaah
Aaaaaaaah

14. Silas Lane (Barrett) tracks

Swan Lee got up at the Running Foot pow-wow,
heading from the fire to his waiting canoe.
Chattering Squaw untied the wigwam door,
the chief blew smoke rings two by two!

The land in silence stands...

Swan Lee, his boat by the bank in the darkness,
loosened the rope in the creek is entwined.
A feather from the wing of a wild young eagle,
pointed to the land where his fortune he'd find

The land in silence stands...

Swan Lee paddled on from the land of his fathers,
his eyes scanned the undergrowth on either side.
From the shore hung a hot, heavy, creature infested
tropic, Swan Lee had a bow by his side

The land in silence stands...

Swan Lee kept time, half on land, half on water,
Grizzly bear and raccoon his fare.
He followed his ears to the great water fall,
Swan Lee knew deep down that his squaw was there!

The land in silence stands....

Suddenly the rush of the mighty great thunder,
confronted Swan Lee as his song he sang,
In the dawn, with his squaw, he was battling homewards
It was all written down by Long Silas Lang.

The land in silence stands...
The land in silence stands...
The land in silence stands.

17. Milky Way (Barrett) tracks

What'd you ever say today when you're in the milky way
oh tell me please
-just to give you a squeeze
if I met you - I told you what to do
seems a while
since I could smile the way you do...

how many times, if I try, if I may,
when you're in the milky way
half of your time -beside me only atmosphere
- the singular raised by heats and wet seems a while
since I could smile the way you do...

What can anyone mean to you
standing in the milky way
take life easy
- I mean so easy
Why so empty...?
I told you - I can tell you
what to do - when I hold you
and I tell you "I love you"
I feel that I'm way you do...

Give a grasp of life today
when you're in the milky way
oh, try to please! Knock on wood of the trees
glad you, mould you, mould you and hold you
means five miles
and everyway for you...

Comments: This RoIO is similar to "A Saucerful Of Outtakes". There are 3 more
tracks, but I'm pretty sure the first 14 tracks were dubbed from "A Saucerful Of
Outtakes". Even the cover is the same (they only changed the title).
"Lucy Leave" and "King Bee" come from the first Floyd's session. Sound is
excellent, in mono.
"Interstellar Overdrive" is the "Tonite Let's All Make Love In London" version
(17' long). Mono. Sup.
"Astronomy Domine" is really nice! This is the Floyd's appearance at the "Look
Of The Week" TV show, on May 14, 1967. It is often wrongly referred as from the "Games For May" concert (Queen Elizabeth Hall, May 12), or from the Roundhouse (July 9). The sound quality is excellent, in mono, with some tape hiss.
The most interesting tracks are "Experiment" (alias "Sunshine") and "Silas
Lane". They are outtakes from "The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn" sessions. And
they are very rare on RoIO CD ! "Sunshine" begins with organ chords, then some hazardous guitar's lines, and finally the drums and bass begin to play a strong rhythm. "Silas Lane" only features Syd playing some chords, with sometimes strange distorted piano notes from Rick! This song later became "Swan Lee (Silas Lang)", and was recorded by Barrett during his sessions for "The Madcap Laughs" album. It didn't appear on the album, but on the 1988 compilation "Opel".
Anyway, the version on this RoIO is a very early version, very far from the
final "Opel" version. The sound quality for these 2 rare outtakes is excellent,
in mono.
With tracks 6 to 13, we have the first 2 BBC sessions (the only BBC sessions
with Syd). The first took place at the BBC Playhouse Theatre, September 25, 1967 (broadcast October 1). The second session was recorded at Maida Vale Studio 4, December 20, 1967 (broadcast December 31). This is interesting to have these early sessions, but the sound quality is only VG, and not better than the versions on "The Complete Top Gear Sessions 1967-1969" RoIO.
"Flaming" is the alternate mix, as it appeared on the 3rd U.S. single (released
on 5 Aug 1967, on Capitol's Tower label). This is a rough mono mix, not very
different from the regular one (some background sounds are mixed louder). It was mastered from vinyl. The sound quality is "only" Ex (some "Sup" versions for this single can be found on other RoIOs: "A CD Full Of Secrets", "Pink Light
Rarities"...).
"Reaction In G" is taken from the 1967 Rotterdam concert at Oude Ahoy Hallen
("The Hippy Happy Fair"). This concert took place on 13 Nov 1967, not 12 Oct
1967 as it is often referred on other RoIOs. This is a mono audience recording,
not too bad for such an early Floyd recording. VG.
The last track, "Milky Way", is a Barrett outtake. I compared it with the
version that appears on the official "Opel" compilation, and it is slightly
different. The basic track (acoustic guitar and vocals) is the same. So I guess
this is the "take 5" mentioned on "Opel". But there are some overdubs that DON'T appear on the "Opel" version: a kind of chorus guitar on the background, and a bass playing a short transition. In fact, the "Opel" version is the simple basic track, in perfect quality, but it's only Syd playing and singing. The version here is more than the basic track. Mono. Ex.
This is a nice compilation of early Floyd stuff. The most interesting tracks are
the "Piper At The Gates Of Dawn" outtakes ("Sunshine" and "Silas Lane"), and the "Look Of The Week" appearance ("Astronomy Domine"). This compilation is also
interesting if you don't have the 1967 "Top Gear" sessions. - MARC-OLIVIER

Codec Lame 1.20, engine 3.88 Alpha 8
128 kps, joint stereo, normal quality
(dada la calidad de sonido del CD original, no se ganaría nada con un bitrate superior)
